Education New Zealand is now seeking inspiring, engaging and experienced presenters for the 27th New Zealand International Education Conference and Expo (NZIEC).
We encourage you to check out the information, terms and conditions below and to submit your proposal before 16 March 2018.
The New Zealand International Education Conference and Expo (NZIEC) is the annual conference for New Zealand’s international education industry.
Established in 1991, NZIEC is in its 27th year. NZIEC brings together practitioners and leaders from across New Zealand’s fourth-largest export industry to explore strategies for growth. It provides an opportunity to discuss, strategise and connect with expert speakers and delegates. NZIEC’s mission is to lead international education thinking.

Conference theme and breakout streams
The theme for NZIEC 2018 is Inspiring Global Citizens.
This year’s conference will feature five breakout streams:

- Contributing to New Zealand.

NZIEC 2018 priorities
We have several priorities for NZIEC 2018 presentations:
We encourage you to go ‘beyond the 101’ and to deliver advanced insights for delegates who are experienced international education practitioners. Please indicate in your submission whether your presentation relates to Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced practitioners.
Let’s try and avoid ‘death by powerpoint’! NZIEC attendees value the opportunity to interact within breakout sessions. Presentations which provide attendees the opportunity to (meaningfully) interact are likely to be well-attended. In your submission, we will ask you how you plan to engage with your audience.
Clear learning outcomes
We frequently get feedback from delegates that the breakout session they attended was not what they expected. Please ensure you are clear about what learning outcomes your audience will take away with them.
Our call for presenters is a contestable process; there is no guarantee that your presentation will be selected. Please familiarise yourself with these guidelines to maximise your chances of selection.

NZIEC 2017 attracted 738 delegates from 21 countries. NZIEC 2018 is expected to attract a similar number of delegates.
Typically, one-third of the NZIEC audience hails from the tertiary sector, with another third from the school sector. Other attendees include education technology and services businesses, agents, economic development agencies, central government representatives, and foreign dignitaries.
In your submission, you will be asked to identify who your intended audience is. If your proposal relates to a number of streams, choose the stream that fits best.
NZIEC features a range of session formats, including debate, panel, cafe and meet up sessions. We particularly seek presenters to deliver presentations in the following formats:
The traditional conference format involving a ‘sage on the stage’. This format requires a presenter to inform and inspire delegates; to take them on a journey. All presentations are expected to allow for at least 10 minutes of dialogue with the audience at the end. We also encourage presentation sessions to be as interactive as possible.
Workshops involve high levels of audience interaction and participation, with a focus on ‘hands-on-practice’. These interactive sessions see delegates work individually or in groups to implement or practice the concept or technique that was taught by the expert presenter-facilitator.
Panel discussions involve a group of industry experts aimed at discussing a topic in front of an audience, usually with differing perspectives and/or from different sectors within industry. Panels involve a moderator who guides the discussion and elicits audience questions, with the goal of being informative and entertaining.
Crowdsource cafés are designed to harness the collective intelligence of our industry. These interactive sessions see delegates working in groups to brainstorm or problem solve a particular challenge or opportunity related to international education. Delegates are encouraged to come to share their insights, tips and best practice with each other. The bulk of the time is devoted to group collaboration, discussion and reporting back; the facilitator provides framing, inspiration and provocation to encourage delegates to do that.
Presenters are welcome to suggest alternative formats for their presentation.
A standard breakout session is 40 minutes. Presenters should allow time for a brief introduction by the session chair as well as at least 10 minutes dialogue with the audience (or equivalent audience participation).

The call for presenters is a contestable process. Upon submission, your proposal will be analysed for fit with the conference theme, breakout stream themes and conference priorities. You may be asked to provide greater clarity or more information on your submission. Your submission will be rejected if it is not considered to fit within conference priorities.
Submissions will be reviewed by the programme panel, and other industry experts as required. Further information or clarity may be required prior to a decision being made.
If your submission has been accepted for delivery, you will be asked to confirm your submission and availability to present at NZIEC.
Presenters who are selected to participate in NZIEC 2018 are required to undertake a run-through of their presentation (in person, by phone or by Skype) with ENZ staff during July. This is part of our standard quality assurance processes. Presenters will be expected to take on board our feedback to revise their presentations.
Complimentary presenter passes
Individuals confirmed to present at NZIEC will receive a complimentary pass to participate in the NZIEC 2018 programme. The complimentary pass includes attendance on days 1 and 2 of the conference, as well as the networking drinks and conference dinner.
Please note that only one complimentary presenter pass is provided per breakout session. If you wish to have more than one presenter for your session, we will provide the lead presenter with the complimentary pass, and any additional presenters will need to pay the standard delegate rates.
Presenters are responsible for all other expenses they may incur, including accommodation and travel.
Recording and publication of conference proceedings
If you are selected to present at NZIEC 2018, the information supplied in this form may be used for the conference website, programme and promotions, subject to editing for consistency and other reasons. will have the opportunity to review prior to publication.
Unless otherwise requested, slide presentations will be made available on the NZIEC website following the conference (usually in PDF format). Conference proceedings may be photographed and filmed for publication on the NZIEC website and other ENZ channels, as well as to promote future conferences and related ENZ services.
NZIEC breakout sessions are designed to inspire, inform and challenge attendees. They are not designed for providers to directly promote their products and services. Presenters who wish to promote specific products or services to attendees are encouraged to look at the sponsor and exhibitor opportunities on offer.
